Black Forest Timber Construction Center
Between two wooded slopes on the Menzenschwander Alb with an unobstructed view of the southern Black Forest, the center for timber construction Black Forest is being built.
Architectural interventions will transform the Kurhaus in the middle of the rear village in Menzenschwand into a new prestigious location for teaching, mediation and temporary living. How will this be done?
We propose to reduce the existing conglomerate to the historic Longo House from 1828 and the hall from 1975 and create a courtyard for the Timber Construction Center with the new event areas and apartments.
As a new building block, the new building will house the event areas and apartments. The permanent exhibition and administration will be housed in Haus Longo. The former Kursaal will be opened up to the landscape to the north and divided into two levels by inserting a catering and information box. The future reception will be located at the interface between the restaurant and the exhibition.
The conversion of the existing building gives concrete form to the character of the existing substance by transforming the hall for gastronomic use. This arouses curiosity and enlivens the ensemble, a figurehead and magnet for the timber construction center. The new construction of the event rooms connects with the buildings of the village through the traditional contours of the building and thus integrates itself confidently into the village design. A respectful approach to the Menzenschwand village ensemble.
The main access to the timber construction center is from the south via Winterhalder Straße, where the parking spaces are also located. The new courtyard stretches between the existing building and the new building, capturing and staging the view to the north. The pedestrian access via the bridge over the stream leads directly past the new restaurant with terrace; an inviting gesture on the Menzenschwander Alb.
