Home for the elderly
Lined up along the River Enz, these housing blocks accommodate senior citizens who are still able to live on their own and run their own households. Access to this development is via a birch-lined route along the river, which at this point flows slowly and forms an extensive, peaceful area of water, with an old weir drawn across it and a fish ladder. The four individual blocks are lined up at right angles to the river
In their form, the blocks resemble traditional housing in this area; except that the timbers of the roofs and walls, the windows and doors were worked to finer dimensions. The development seeks parallels in the built forms of the surroundings, which have evolved in the course of time. Only on closer study does the complexity of the design become apparent.
The openings in the outer walls can be varied by means of sliding units large and small. These help to regulate the ingress of daylight according to the season and the time of day. The roof has a transparent outer skin instead of tiles. The timber surface visible beneath this skin means that the volume of the building is united in all three dimensions.
